What Does RTI Stand For in Education?

What does RTI stand for in education? It stands for Response to Intervention, a system schools use to find students who are struggling, give them extra teaching early and check often whether that help is working. The name says it plainly: the school watches how a student responds to each intervention.

Parents usually meet the term in a note home that says their child will join an RTI group or get Tier 2 support. That note does not mean a diagnosis. It means the school has noticed a gap, often in reading or math, and wants to close it before it grows.

What does RTI stand for in education, word by word?

Response to Intervention is easier to follow once you split it up.

  • Response: how much a student improves, measured with short, regular checks.
  • To: the link between the help given and the progress seen.
  • Intervention: targeted teaching beyond the regular lesson, such as a small reading group or extra math practice.

Many schools now fold RTI into a wider framework called MTSS, a multi tiered system of supports, which covers behavior and social skills as well as academics. Teachers often use the two names almost interchangeably.

How the three RTI tiers work

RTI tiers at a glance
TierWho gets itWhat it looks like
Tier 1Every studentStrong classroom teaching plus screening tests a few times a year
Tier 2Students below benchmarkSmall group lessons several times a week, with progress checks every week or two
Tier 3Students who still need moreIntensive, often one on one or very small group help, with frequent checks

Students can move up or down the tiers as their scores change. A child might spend a few months in Tier 2, catch up and return to Tier 1 only. The data from these checks, called progress monitoring, drives every decision.

What does RTI stand for in school notes to parents?

Letter home: "Our winter reading check showed Jordan needs extra practice, so he will get RTI support, 30 minutes four days a week. We will share her progress every six weeks." This means Jordan is getting Tier 2 help and the school will report whether it is working.

Good questions to ask the teacher:

  1. What skill is my child working on?
  2. How often and for how long is the group?
  3. How will you measure progress, and when will I see results?
  4. What happens if the progress is slow?

Your child's school records, including RTI data, are protected under FERPA, and you have the right to review them.

RTI and special education

Under federal special education law, known as IDEA, schools may use a student's response to intervention as part of deciding whether the student has a specific learning disability. RTI is not the same as special education, though. It is a general education process open to any student.

Parents can ask in writing for a full special education evaluation at any time. A school should not make a family wait for RTI to finish before considering that request. If a student qualifies, the next step is usually an IEP, an individualized education program.

This is general information about school support programs. Each state and district runs these programs a little differently; your child's school or the state education department can explain the local rules.

Saying and writing RTI

Teachers say it as three letters, "ar tee eye," and print it in caps without dots. The "ar" at the front calls for an: an RTI group, an RTI plan. Some districts call the process Response to Instruction instead, which means the same thing.
