What Does PBIS Stand For?

SchoolEducationSchoolsUpdated Oct 30

What does PBIS stand for? In education, PBIS means Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is a schoolwide framework for teaching students how to behave, noticing when they do it well, and giving extra help to those who need more than the basics.

Instead of waiting for problems and then handing out punishments, a PBIS school sets a few clear expectations, teaches them like any other lesson, and tracks behavior data to see what is working. Parents often first meet the letters on a school newsletter, a hallway poster or a reward ticket their child brings home.

What does PBIS stand for? Breaking down the name

The four key words in PBIS
LetterWordWhat it means in a school
PPositiveFocus on what students should do, not only on what they should stop
BBehavioralAbout actions in class, hallways, buses and lunchrooms
IInterventionsPlanned steps that change how students act
SSupportsHelp, structure and encouragement for every student

The word "and" sits between interventions and supports but does not get a letter. Some districts write SWPBIS, adding SW for schoolwide, to stress that every adult in the building uses the same approach. You will also hear the older term positive behavior support, or PBS.

PBIS in school: the three tiers

PBIS sorts support into layers, like a pyramid. Most students do well with the first layer, and fewer need each layer above it.

The tiers of PBIS support
TierWho it servesWhat it looks like
Tier 1All studentsThree to five schoolwide rules, taught and practiced, with praise and rewards
Tier 2Small groups who need moreDaily check in with a mentor, social skills groups, extra feedback
Tier 3A few students with serious needsAn individual plan built from a careful look at why a behavior happens

Teams review data, such as office referrals and attendance, to decide who moves between tiers. PBIS often sits inside a broader plan called a multi tiered system of supports, or MTSS, which covers academics too.

What PBIS looks like day to day

Many schools turn their expectations into a short slogan, such as "Be safe, be respectful, be responsible." Teachers then show what each rule looks like in each place: walking in the hallway, raising a hand in class, cleaning up at lunch.

A note home: "Maya earned a Paw Pass today for helping a classmate pick up spilled crayons." The pass is a PBIS reward. Students collect them for showing the school's expectations, and they might trade them for a small privilege or a class celebration.

When a rule is broken, the response is meant to be predictable and fair, with the goal of reteaching. Office referrals are still used, but they are tracked so the team can spot patterns, like a busy hallway at one time of day.

What does PBIS stand for in education law and policy?

The phrase positive behavioral interventions and supports appears in the federal special education law. For a student with an IEP whose behavior gets in the way of learning, the IEP team must consider these kinds of supports. That is one reason many districts adopted PBIS across whole schools. The U.S. Department of Education also funds a national technical assistance center that helps schools put it in place.

This page offers general information. For questions about your child's plan or rights, talk with the school team, the district or an education advocate.

PBIS stands for a framework, not a single program

Every school builds its own version. One may use tickets and a school store, while another uses class points or simple verbal praise. What they share is the method: clear expectations, direct teaching, recognition, consistent responses and decisions based on data. If you are a parent, it is fair to ask the school how its PBIS system works and how families are kept informed.

How to say and write PBIS

Say it letter by letter, "P B I S." The letters are all capitals and carry no periods, and the article is a: "a PBIS school." For more letters you may find in report cards and school meetings, see the school acronyms guide, or read what is an acronym for the basic idea.

Questions people ask

What does PBIS stand for in school?

The full name is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is the system a school uses to teach, recognize and support good behavior.

What are the three tiers of PBIS?

Tier 1 is for all students, Tier 2 adds targeted help for small groups, and Tier 3 gives individual plans to students with the greatest needs.

Is PBIS required?

Schools are not all required to use the PBIS framework, but many states and districts encourage or adopt it. For students with IEPs, federal law asks teams to consider positive behavioral supports when behavior affects learning.

What is the difference between PBIS and MTSS?

PBIS focuses on behavior. MTSS is a wider system of tiered support that covers both academics and behavior, and PBIS often fits inside it.

Does PBIS mean no consequences?

No. Consequences still exist, but they are consistent and paired with reteaching. The main effort goes into preventing problems before they start.
