What Does STEM Stand For?

SchoolEducationCareersUpdated Oct 30

What does STEM stand for? The letters stand for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, four subjects that schools, colleges and employers often group together because they share the same habits of mind: asking questions, testing ideas, measuring results and solving problems with evidence.

You will see the word on a school's course list, a summer camp flyer, a scholarship form or a job board filter. In each place it points to the same cluster of subjects, though the exact list of classes or careers it covers can vary from one program to the next.

MMathematicsAlgebra, geometry, statistics, calculus

The STEM full form uses "Mathematics," not "Math," though people say "math" in everyday talk. Because you say STEM as a single word, it is a true acronym. Our guide to acronym vs abbreviation explains how that differs from letter by letter forms.

What does STEM stand for in education?

In a school setting, STEM is more than a list of subjects. It usually means a way of teaching that links them. A STEM lesson might ask students to design a bridge from craft sticks (engineering), calculate how much weight it should hold (math), test it (science) and record the results in a spreadsheet (technology).

On a middle school flyer: "Join STEM Club on Tuesdays. This month: build a water filter from household items." The club mixes science and engineering in a hands on project.

Districts may label whole schools, magnet programs or elective tracks as STEM. Colleges list STEM majors, and many scholarships and grants are set aside for students in those fields. If a form asks whether your major is a STEM field, check the program's own list, since lines are drawn differently. Some count psychology or economics, and some do not.

STEM jobs and careers

The STEM acronym meaning stretches well past school. In hiring and workforce reports, STEM jobs include roles such as:

  • Software developers and data analysts
  • Civil, mechanical and electrical engineers
  • Lab scientists, chemists and environmental scientists
  • Statisticians and actuaries
  • Engineering technicians and drafters

Health care roles such as nursing and medicine are sometimes included and sometimes counted separately. That split is one reason the variant STEMM, with a second M for Medicine, exists.

STEM vs STEAM and other spin offs

The most common variant is STEAM, which adds an A for Arts. Supporters of STEAM argue that design, drawing, music and writing feed creative problem solving, so they fold them into the same projects. A STEAM lesson might have students design a poster that explains the bridge they built, or compose a short piece of music using patterns from math.

Before STEM caught on, some education reports used the ordering SMET for the same four fields. STEM was easier to say and became the standard term.

Writing and saying STEM

  • Say it as one word that rhymes with "gem."
  • Spell it with four capitals and no dots: STEM, not S.T.E.M. or Stem.
  • Use it as an adjective before a noun: STEM classes, STEM majors, STEM careers.
  • Article: "a STEM program," because the word starts with an S sound.

Sample sentences:

  • "Our library hosts a STEM night every spring."
  • "She switched to a STEM major after taking chemistry."
  • "The grant funds STEM teachers in rural districts."
  • "Is computer science a STEM field? Yes, it is the T."

Not the same as a plant stem

Lowercase stem is just an ordinary English word: the stalk of a plant, the part of a wine glass, or the base form of a word in grammar. A stem cell, in biology, is a cell that can develop into other types of cells. None of these are short for anything. If the letters are capitalized and appear next to words like class, career or program, they mean the four subjects.

Questions people ask

What does STEM stand for in school?

In school, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It can mean those classes as a group or a style of teaching that blends them through hands on projects.

Is STEM an acronym or an abbreviation?

Both labels fit. STEM is pronounced like a single word, which makes it an acronym, and every acronym is also a type of abbreviation.

What is the difference between STEM and STEAM?

STEAM adds Arts to the four STEM subjects. Programs that use it bring design, music, writing or visual art into science and math projects.

Is medicine part of STEM?

It depends on who is counting. Some lists include health and medical fields, while others keep them separate and use STEMM to add the extra M.

Is math or mathematics the M in STEM?

The formal full form says Mathematics. In everyday talk, people usually say math, and both refer to the same subject.
