PLC meanings ranked

  1. Public limited company: seen after British and Irish company names in news, investing and annual reports.
  2. Professional learning community: heard in US schools, district plans and teacher schedules.
  3. Programmable logic controller: used in manufacturing, engineering and maintenance work.
  4. Product life cycle: taught in business and marketing courses.

A quick rule: if it comes right after a company name, it is the business meaning. If your child's teacher mentions it, it is the school meaning. If it is in a wiring diagram, it is the controller.

PLC as public limited company

In the UK, a public limited company can offer its shares to the general public. Many, though not all, are listed on a stock exchange. Limited means the owners' liability is limited: shareholders usually cannot lose more than they put in. The company must meet stricter rules than a private company, including minimum share capital and published accounts.

The letters are usually written after the name, often in lowercase: "Riverside Holdings plc." A private limited company uses Ltd instead. Stateside, a rough counterpart is a corporation marked Inc. or Corp., and a small business may be an LLC. These forms are not identical, since each country sets its own company law.

This is general information about business terms. Rules for forming and running a company differ by country and state, so check with a business lawyer or an accountant before you choose a structure.

What does PLC stand for in education?

In schools, PLC stands for professional learning community. It is a group of teachers, often in the same grade or subject, who meet on a regular schedule to look at student work and test results and decide what to do next. Many US districts set aside weekly PLC time.

PLC teams commonly organize their talks around four questions:

  1. What do we want students to learn?
  2. How will we know when they have learned it?
  3. How will we respond when some students do not learn it?
  4. How will we extend learning for students who already know it?

A school calendar: "Early release Wednesday: PLC meetings 1:30 to 3:00." Students go home early so teacher teams can meet.

The term sits with other school letters such as IEP and PBIS on the school acronyms page.

PLC as programmable logic controller

A programmable logic controller is an industrial computer built to survive heat, dust and vibration. It reads signals from sensors and switches, follows a program, and turns motors, valves, lights and alarms on or off. PLCs run conveyor belts, bottling lines, water treatment plants, elevators and many other systems.

They appeared in the late 1960s as a replacement for large panels of electrical relays in car factories. Changing a relay panel meant rewiring it, while a PLC could simply be reprogrammed. Many PLCs are still programmed in a visual style called ladder logic, which looks like a relay wiring diagram. They are a close cousin of CNC machines in automated shops.

PLC stands for more than one thing: examples

  • "The firm is listed in London as a plc." (business)
  • "Our math PLC meets every Tuesday after school." (education)
  • "The line stopped because the PLC lost power." (industry)
  • "Smartphones are in the maturity stage of the PLC." (marketing)
  • "She is a controls technician who troubleshoots PLCs." (industry)

Writing PLC correctly

Say each letter. The plural is PLCs. Pair it with a, as the spoken P has a consonant sound: "a PLC meeting." In British company names, plc in lowercase is very common and fully correct; in US writing about schools and machines, capitals are standard.
