What Does MCP Stand For?

TechAIDevelopersUpdated Oct 30

What does MCP stand for? Today the most searched answer is Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to outside tools and data, such as a calendar, a file folder, a database or a company's internal system. Instead of building a custom link for every pairing, developers build to one shared set of rules.

The letters are older than that, though. Doctors use MCP for the knuckle joints of the hand, older computing used it for a Master Control Program, and chip makers use it for a multi chip package. This page covers the AI meaning first, then the others.

What does MCP stand for in AI?

In AI, MCP is the Model Context Protocol. Each word does work:

  • Model: the AI model, usually a large language model, that answers questions.
  • Context: the extra information the model needs to do a task well, such as a document, a list of tasks or live data.
  • Protocol: an agreed set of rules for how two programs talk to each other.

A language model on its own only knows what it learned in training plus what you type. MCP gives it a standard way to ask other software for more, and to take actions through that software when the user allows it. To learn more about the model side, see what LLM stands for.

How the Model Context Protocol works

The design has three parts:

  1. Host: the app the person uses, such as a chat assistant or a code editor.
  2. Client: a connector inside the host that speaks MCP.
  3. Server: a small program that wraps a tool or data source and offers it in MCP form.

A server can offer tools (actions like "create a calendar event"), resources (data like files or records) and prompts (ready made instructions). The messages are written in a common format called JSON, so any app that follows the rules can use any server. Servers can run on your own computer or on the web.

In practice: a user asks an AI assistant, "What is on my schedule tomorrow?" A calendar MCP server returns the events, and the assistant writes a summary. With a different server, the same assistant could read a support ticket or search a parts database.

The medical meaning is the most common outside tech. Your MCP joints are the big knuckles where your fingers meet your hand. A doctor may note them when checking for arthritis or after a hand injury. In older computing systems, Master Control Program was the name of the core operating system on a well known line of mainframes from the 1960s, and the phrase later became a general nickname for any program that runs everything else.

This page gives general information. For questions about joint pain or a medical report, talk with a doctor.

MCP vs API: what is the difference?

An API is any interface one program offers so others can use it. Each API has its own design. MCP is one shared standard that sits on top of those many APIs and presents them to AI apps in the same shape. A team might build an MCP server that calls its existing API behind the scenes, so every compatible assistant can use it without custom code.

MCP is also different from RAG, retrieval augmented generation. RAG is a method for pulling relevant text into a model's prompt. MCP is a connection standard, and RAG style search can be one of the tools an MCP server offers.

Saying and writing the MCP acronym

  • Say it as three letters: "M C P."
  • Write it in capitals, no periods.
  • Use "an" before it, since M sounds like "em": "an MCP server."
  • Spell it out on first use in a report: "the Model Context Protocol (MCP)."

Common phrases you will see are "MCP server," "MCP client," "MCP tools" and "MCP support." For the general difference between letter sets read as words and those read letter by letter, see what is an acronym.

Using MCP in a sentence

  • "Our team wrote an MCP server so the assistant can look up order status."
  • "The editor added MCP support, so it can read our issue tracker."
  • "Only connect MCP servers you trust, since they can take actions for you."
  • "The rheumatologist checked the MCP joints on both hands."

The third line is a real safety point. A server can read data and act on your behalf, so people review what each one can do before turning it on. More AI and computing terms are on the tech acronyms page.

Questions people ask

What does MCP stand for in AI?

It stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets AI apps connect to outside tools and data sources in one consistent way.

What does MCP stand for in computing systems?

In AI software it means Model Context Protocol. In older computing it meant Master Control Program, the core operating system on some mainframe computers.

What is an MCP server?

It is a small program that offers a tool or data source to AI apps using the MCP rules. Examples include servers for files, calendars, databases and code repositories.

What is the MCP joint?

It is the metacarpophalangeal joint, the knuckle where each finger meets the hand. Doctors often write MCP on X ray and exam notes.

Is MCP the same as an API?

No. An API is one program's own interface. MCP is a shared standard that lets AI apps use many tools through the same kind of connection.
