What Does LLM Stand For?

TechAIUpdated Oct 30

What does LLM stand for? In technology, LLM stands for large language model, a type of AI system trained on huge amounts of text so that it can read a prompt and write a reply that sounds natural. Chat assistants, writing helpers and many coding tools run on one.

In law schools, the same letters, usually written LL.M., mean Master of Laws, an advanced degree that lawyers earn after their first law degree. The two meanings almost never collide: if the talk is about apps, prompts or chatbots, it is the AI meaning, and if it is about bar exams, tax law or graduate school, it is the degree.

What does LLM stand for in AI?

  • Large: the model has billions of internal settings, called parameters, and learns from an enormous body of text.
  • Language: its main job is working with words, including questions, stories, code and translations.
  • Model: it is a mathematical system that represents patterns, not a database of stored answers.

An LLM learns by reading text and practicing one task again and again: guessing the next small piece of text, called a token. After enough practice it gets very good at producing writing that fits the prompt. Developers then train it further so it follows instructions and answers helpfully. LLM in a chat assistant

When you type a question into a chat assistant, the app sends your words to an LLM, which writes the reply one token at a time. The assistant is the product you see, and the LLM is the engine underneath. GPT, which you can read about on the GPT page, is one well known family of these models.

In a work email: "We are testing an LLM to draft first replies to customer questions. A person reviews each one before it goes out." Here the team is using the model as a writing helper, with a human checking the result.

Because an LLM predicts likely text, it can sound sure of itself while being wrong. People call these errors hallucinations. Tools often connect the model to trusted documents to reduce them, a method called RAG. Running these models takes a lot of computing power, usually on GPU chips.

What LLMs can and cannot do

Typical strengths and limits
Good atWeak at
Drafting emails, summaries and outlinesKnowing events after its training ended, unless given new data
Explaining ideas in simpler wordsBeing reliably correct on exact facts and numbers
Translating between languagesUnderstanding the world the way people do
Writing and fixing computer codeKeeping private information safe if users paste it in carelessly

A good rule is to treat an LLM's answer as a first draft. Check facts, quotes and figures before relying on them, especially for health, money or legal questions.

LLM full form in law: Master of Laws

The law degree is written LL.M., from the Latin Legum Magister, meaning master of laws. The doubled L is an old way to mark a plural in Latin abbreviations: legum means "of laws," more than one law. The same habit gives LL.B. for bachelor of laws.

In the United States, most lawyers first earn a J.D., then some add an LL.M. to focus on an area such as tax, international or environmental law. Lawyers trained in other countries also take an LL.M. at American schools to learn U.S. law. The program usually lasts about one year.

How to say and write LLM

Say each letter, "L L M." Nobody blends them into one word, so it is an initialism. In tech, capitals without periods are the norm: LLM, plural LLMs. For the degree, the traditional form with periods, LL.M., is common, but LLM without periods is also seen. Use an before it, since it begins with the "el" sound: "an LLM," "an LL.M. program."

  • "The app runs on an LLM hosted in the cloud."
  • "Smaller LLMs can run on a laptop."
  • "She is getting an LL.M. in tax law."
  • "Our team compared three LLMs for the help desk."

LLM vs AI, GPT and AGI

  • AI is the whole field of making computers do tasks that need human-like thinking. An LLM is one kind of AI.
  • GPT is one family of LLMs. Every GPT is an LLM, but not every LLM is a GPT.
  • AGI, artificial general intelligence, is the idea of a system that matches people across nearly all tasks. Today's LLMs are not that.
  • MCP is a protocol that lets an LLM connect to outside tools and data.

Questions people ask

What does LLM stand for in a chat app?

In that context it means large language model. The chat app is built on top of LLMs from the GPT family, which write the replies you see.

What is the LLM full form?

In tech the full form is large language model. In law it is Master of Laws, from the Latin Legum Magister, written LL.M.

Is an LLM the same as AI?

An LLM is one type of AI. AI is the broad field, and LLMs are the part focused on reading and writing language.

Why is the law degree LL.M. and not L.M.?

The doubled L shows a plural in Latin, so LL stands for legum, meaning of laws. It is the same pattern as LL.B. for bachelor of laws.

How do you pronounce LLM?

Say the three letters, L L M, one after another.
