What does AI stand for? In nearly every news story, app store listing and work meeting, AI stands for artificial intelligence, the field of computer science that builds systems able to do tasks we usually link to human thinking, such as recognizing speech, sorting photos, translating text or suggesting the next word you type.
The two letters are now used for the field, for a single program ("the AI flagged the email as spam") and as an adjective ("AI tools"). Farming, meeting notes and classrooms borrow the pair for other meanings too, and those are covered below.

What does AI stand for in technology?
Read the two letters as two words. A is for artificial, meaning made by people rather than found in nature. I is for intelligence, the capacity to learn, plan and figure things out. Put together, the ai full form describes machines built to act in ways that look smart.
Most systems people use today are narrow. A program that spots tumors on scans cannot also plan a vacation. Researchers use terms like general intelligence for the much harder goal of a system that handles almost any task a person could, and they disagree about how close that is.
How AI works, in plain words
Older programs followed rules a person wrote by hand: if this, then that. Modern systems mostly learn from examples instead. Engineers feed a model huge amounts of data, such as photos labeled "cat" or "dog," and the model adjusts millions or billions of internal numbers until its guesses match the labels. That process is called machine learning, and a popular form of it, built on layered networks, is called deep learning.
Chatbots that write paragraphs are built on a kind of model called a large language model; see LLM and GPT for how those letters break down. Another technique, RAG, lets a model look up documents before it answers.
Where you see AI every day
- Phones: face unlock, photo search, voice assistants and predictive text.
- Email: spam filters and suggested replies.
- Maps: traffic predictions and route choices.
- Shopping and video sites: "you might also like" lists.
- Banks: fraud alerts when a card is used in an odd place.
- School and work: writing helpers, tutoring tools and meeting summaries.
In a job post: "Experience with AI tools a plus." The employer wants someone comfortable using software that drafts, sorts or analyzes content, not necessarily someone who builds it.
Where the term came from
The phrase artificial intelligence was coined in a 1955 proposal for a summer research workshop held at Dartmouth College in 1956. That meeting is widely treated as the start of AI as a research field. Progress came in waves, with bursts of excitement and long slow periods. Faster chips, cheaper storage and vast online data pushed the field forward much more quickly in recent decades.
AI stands for other things too
| Field | Stands for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Artificial intelligence | "The app uses AI to sort photos." |
| Farming and vet care | Artificial insemination | "The herd is bred by AI." |
| Meetings | Action item | "AI: Jordan sends the budget by Friday." |
| Schools | Academic integrity | "Review the AI policy in the syllabus." |
| Travel | All inclusive | "Room rate: AI, meals and drinks included." |
When the topic is a computer, phone or app, the letters almost always mean artificial intelligence. On a farm or in meeting notes, check the context.
How to say and write AI
Say each letter: "A I." Since the first sound is a vowel, write an before it: an AI model, an AI policy. Capitalize both letters and skip periods. In formal writing, spell it out the first time, "artificial intelligence (AI)," then use the short form. In some fonts a capital I looks like a lowercase L, which is why you sometimes see it misread online.

Questions people ask
What does AI mean in texting?
In a text about apps, photos or homework, AI usually means artificial intelligence, as in "I asked an AI to fix my resume." In a work chat it can also mean action item.
Is AI an acronym or an abbreviation?
The two letters are spoken one by one, so the precise label is initialism. Plenty of people still call it an acronym, and nobody will be confused. Our short guide to what an acronym is sorts out the labels.
What is the difference between AI and machine learning?
Artificial intelligence is the broad goal of making machines act smart. Machine learning is one way to get there, where the system learns patterns from data instead of following hand-written rules.
Does AI think like a person?
No. Current systems find patterns in data and produce likely outputs. They can be very useful and also confidently wrong, so it is wise to check important facts they give you.
In school, what is AI and what does it stand for?
Most classrooms treat the AI full form as artificial intelligence. Some schools also use it for academic integrity, the rules about honest work and citing sources.
