What does TA stand for in a school? It stands for teaching assistant, and in many elementary, middle and high schools people also read it as teacher's assistant. Either way, a TA is a person who helps the lead teacher or professor run a class.
The job looks different by level. In a college course, the TA is usually a graduate student who leads discussion groups, grades papers and holds office hours. In a K to 12 classroom, a TA may be an adult staff member who works with small groups, or a high school student who spends one class period helping a teacher.

What does TA stand for in college?
On a college syllabus, TA almost always means teaching assistant. Large lecture courses split students into smaller sections, and a TA leads those. Many TAs are graduate students paid through an assistantship, which may cover part of their tuition. Some schools also hire strong undergraduates, sometimes called undergraduate TAs or peer tutors.
Common college TA tasks include:
- Leading a weekly discussion section or lab
- Grading homework, quizzes and essays
- Holding office hours to answer questions
- Proctoring exams and answering course email
On a syllabus: "Questions about grades go to your TA first. Contact the professor if the issue is not resolved." The TA is the first stop for help in that course.
What does TA stand for in a school with younger grades?
In K to 12 schools the letters can point to two different people.
- An adult teaching assistant. This staff member works under the teacher, helps with small groups, reads with students, supports children with extra needs and keeps the room running. Some districts use other titles for the same role, such as aide, paraprofessional or "para."
- A student TA. Many high schools let older students take a period as a teacher's assistant. They file papers, set up labs, run copies or help younger classmates.
A student schedule that lists "TA, Room 214" usually means the student helps in that room during that period. It may count for credit or for service hours, depending on the school.
How to say and write TA
Say the two letters: "T A." Both letters are capitals and take no dots. You would say "a TA in the chemistry lab." To make it plural, tack on a small s: TAs, never TA's. When you write to a TA, use their name the way they introduce themselves, such as "Hi Jordan" or "Hello Ms. Rivera."
A TA as a verb also turns up in casual talk: "I'm TAing intro biology this term." It is fine in speech, but in formal writing use "serving as a teaching assistant."
