What Does UAT Stand For?

TechSoftwareTestingUpdated Oct 30

What does UAT stand for? In software and IT it stands for user acceptance testing, the stage where the people who will actually use a system try it out and confirm it meets their needs before it goes live. It is usually the final round of testing, after developers and testers have already checked that the code works.

The key word is acceptance. Earlier tests ask "Does it work?" UAT asks "Does it do what we need, the way we need it?" A payroll clerk, a nurse, a store manager or a customer runs real tasks, and their sign-off tells the team the product is ready.

What does UAT stand for in testing?

In a testing plan, each letter carries one idea:

  • U, User: the person the system is built for, not the person who built it.
  • A, Acceptance: agreeing that the work meets the agreed requirements.
  • T, Testing: trying the system with planned tasks and recording results.

Some teams use the T for "test," as in "the UAT is scheduled for Monday." Either way, people pronounce each letter, making UAT an initialism; what is an acronym explains the difference.

Where UAT sits in the testing order

Common testing stages, from first to last
StageWho runs itQuestion it answers
Unit testingDevelopersDoes each small piece of code work?
Integration testingDevelopers, testersDo the pieces work together?
System testingQuality assurance teamDoes the whole system meet the specs?
User acceptance testingEnd users, clientDoes it solve our real problem?

UAT usually runs in a separate copy of the system called the UAT environment or staging, filled with realistic test data. That keeps real customers and real records safe while users click around.

How a UAT round works

  1. Plan: the business and the project team agree on what "accepted" means, often based on the contract or SOW.
  2. Write test cases: short scripts of real tasks, such as "create a new customer and send an invoice."
  3. Run the tests: users follow the scripts and also try things off script.
  4. Log issues: anything wrong or confusing is reported with steps to repeat it.
  5. Fix and retest: developers correct problems and users check again.
  6. Sign off: a business owner formally accepts the release.

In a project email: "UAT opens Tuesday. Please complete scripts 1 through 12 in the UAT environment and log defects by Friday so we can hit go-live." Staff are being asked to test the new system and report problems before launch.

Types of acceptance testing

UAT is the most common kind of acceptance test, but teams also name a few related ones:

  • Alpha testing: done in house by staff before outside users see it.
  • Beta testing: a near final version goes to a wider group of real users.
  • Contract acceptance testing: checks the product against the terms of a contract.
  • Operational acceptance testing: checks backups, security and support readiness.

Teams with automated build pipelines, often called CI (continuous integration), still keep UAT as a human step, because only real users can judge whether a workflow makes sense.

UAT acronym in other settings

Most searches mean software testing, but a few other meanings exist:

Other UAT meanings

When the term sits near words such as release, defect, test case or environment, the software meaning is the one intended.

Tips for writing and joining UAT

  • UAT is printed in caps, without dots. Pair it with a ("a UAT session"), because U sounds like "you."
  • Write test steps so a new user could follow them without help.
  • Report what you expected and what actually happened, with screenshots.
  • Do not skip UAT to save time; problems found after launch cost far more to fix.
  • Agree on the SLA for fixing defects so testers know when to retest.

IT teams and offices use many more letters like these, and the tech acronyms section collects them.

Questions people ask

What is the UAT full form in software?

The UAT full form is user acceptance testing. It is the final testing stage, run by real users, before a system goes live.

Who does UAT?

End users or business staff who will use the system, sometimes along with the client. Developers and testers support them but do not usually run the tests themselves.

What is the difference between UAT and QA?

QA, or quality assurance, checks that the product meets its technical specs and is free of bugs. UAT checks that it meets the users' real needs and can be accepted for release.

What is a UAT environment?

It is a separate copy of the system set up for acceptance testing, with test data. It lets users try everything without touching live records.

Is UAT the same as beta testing?

They overlap. Beta testing is often treated as one kind of user acceptance testing, done with a wider outside group close to release.
