What Does TDS Stand For?

BusinessWater testingTaxUpdated Oct 30

What does TDS stand for? Across the US, the usual answer is Total Dissolved Solids, the amount of minerals, salts and other matter dissolved in water. In India and in global payroll work, the TDS full form is Tax Deducted at Source, a tax taken out of a payment before the money reaches you.

So the same three letters can show up on a water filter box and on a salary slip. The setting around the letters settles which one applies. Below are both main meanings, a few smaller ones, and tips for reading a TDS number.

A meter reading or a ppm figure means water. Rupees, payroll or a tax form means the tax meaning. A product page with a downloadable sheet usually means Technical Data Sheet.

Total Dissolved Solids: what the water number means

Total Dissolved Solids measures everything dissolved in water that is not water itself: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate and small amounts of other matter. A handheld TDS meter estimates it by checking how well the water carries electricity, since dissolved salts make water more conductive.

Results come in parts per million (ppm), which for water is about the same as milligrams per liter. The federal environmental agency lists 500 mg/L as a secondary, non health based guideline for drinking water, mainly about taste, scale and stains. Very low readings are typical after reverse osmosis filters or distilling.

On a filter pitcher guide: "Tap water: TDS 240 ppm. After filter: TDS 40 ppm." This means the filter removed much of the dissolved mineral content. It does not, on its own, prove the water is safe or unsafe.

A TDS meter cannot spot germs or tell which substance is present, so it is a rough guide, not a full safety test.

Tax Deducted at Source in India

Under Indian income tax law, the person or company making certain payments must hold back part of the amount as tax and deposit it with the government. That held back amount is TDS. It applies to salaries, bank interest above a set limit, rent, professional fees and more.

  • The payer is the deductor. The person who receives the money is the deductee.
  • The deducted tax is credited to the deductee's tax account, linked to their PAN (Permanent Account Number).
  • Employers issue a TDS certificate for salary, and the credit can be checked against the taxpayer's annual tax statement.
  • If more tax was deducted than owed, the extra can be claimed back as a refund when filing a return.

The idea is similar to US paycheck withholding, where an employer sends income tax to the government before you are paid. Read about that system on the FICA page.

This is general information about how TDS works. Rates, limits and forms change, so check with a tax professional or the tax department for your own case.

Technical Data Sheet and other TDS uses

In manufacturing, a TDS is a technical data sheet: a document that lists how a product performs, such as drying time for paint, strength for glue or the right mixing ratio. It differs from an SDS, the safety data sheet that covers hazards and first aid. Buyers often ask for both.

In sports, "TDs" with a small s is plain shorthand for touchdowns. Firms also use TDS as an internal code for teams or software, so a work email may define it once and then use the letters freely. See more workplace letters on the business acronyms page.

TDS meaning in real sentences

  • "Our well water tested at 600 ppm TDS, so we added a softener."
  • "Keep the shrimp tank TDS steady when you top off the water."
  • "My bank deducted TDS on the fixed deposit interest."
  • "Please attach the TDS and the SDS for the new sealant."
  • "The quarterback has 20 TDs this season."

Say the letters one by one: "T D S." Since T is a consonant sound ("tee"), use "a" before it: "a TDS meter," "a TDS certificate." No periods are needed.

Questions people ask

What does TDS mean on a water filter?

It means Total Dissolved Solids, the amount of minerals and salts dissolved in the water. The number is shown in ppm, and a lower reading after filtering means the filter removed some of that content.

What is a good TDS level for drinking water?

Many water guides use 500 mg/L (about 500 ppm) as the upper guideline for taste and appearance. TDS alone does not show whether water is safe, because it does not detect germs or name specific chemicals.

What is the TDS full form in tax?

In tax it stands for Tax Deducted at Source. A payer such as an employer or bank deducts tax before paying you and sends it to the tax department on your behalf.

Is TDS the same as a TDS meter reading?

A TDS meter estimates total dissolved solids from electrical conductivity. It is a quick estimate, not a lab test, so readings can differ slightly from a full laboratory result.

Is TDS an acronym, and what is TDS stand for in short?

TDS is an initialism, a kind of acronym where you say each letter: T D S. In short, it stands for Total Dissolved Solids in water talk and Tax Deducted at Source in tax talk.
