What Does SAE Stand For?

GovernmentCarsEngineeringUpdated Oct 30

What does SAE stand for? On a bottle of motor oil, a wrench set or a car spec sheet, it stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, a professional group that writes technical standards for cars, trucks, aircraft and their parts. Today the group calls itself SAE International, because its work reaches well beyond cars and well beyond the United States.

Most people never deal with the society itself. They meet its standards. The viscosity grade printed on an oil jug, the inch sizes stamped on a socket and the levels used to describe self driving cars all trace back to documents the society publishes. The same three letters also have a few unrelated meanings in farm education, college life and British mail, covered below.

The society was founded in 1905 by engineers who wanted shared rules for a new industry. Later it took in aviation and other vehicle engineers, which is one reason the short form now stands on its own. It is a membership and standards body, not a government office, even though agencies often point to its standards in their own rules. You can find the agencies that do regulate vehicles and safety in our government and military acronyms list.

What does SAE stand for in oil?

On motor oil, the letters tell you the oil was graded under the society's viscosity standard. Viscosity is how thick a liquid is and how easily it flows.

On the front of a jug: "SAE 5W-30." The 5W is the cold rating, and the W stands for winter. A lower number before the W means the oil flows better on a cold start. The 30 is the rating at normal engine temperature. A higher number there means a thicker oil when the engine is hot.

A single number with no W, such as SAE 30, marks a single grade oil, often used in lawn mowers and small engines. The grade is only about thickness. It does not rank brands or tell you which oil is better. Your owner's manual names the grade your engine needs, and that is the number to match.

SAE sizes on wrenches and sockets

In a hardware store, an SAE tool set is the one measured in inches, such as 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch. A metric set is measured in millimeters, such as 10 mm or 13 mm. The labels became common because older American cars used inch sized bolts that followed the society's standards.

Mixing the two causes trouble. A 13 mm socket sits close to 1/2 inch, but not close enough, and a loose fit can round off a bolt head. Many home tool kits include both sets for that reason. Some people say "standard" or "imperial" for the inch set, and they mean the same thing as SAE.

In an American high school, a student in an agriculture program who mentions an SAE almost always means the hands on project, not the engineers. In the United States, the envelope idea is usually written SASE, for self addressed stamped envelope.

Saying it and writing it

Speakers name each letter, "S A E," which makes it an initialism. See acronym vs abbreviation if that difference is new to you. Capitals only, without periods. The opening sound is "ess," so the article is an: "an SAE grade," "an SAE socket."

  • "Check the manual for the right SAE grade before you add oil."
  • "I need an SAE wrench, the bolts on this mower are in inches."
  • "My SAE project is a vegetable garden at the school farm."
  • "The car is rated Level 2 on the SAE automation scale."

Quick tips when you see the letters

  • Numbers with a W point to oil grades.
  • Fractions of an inch point to tool sizes.
  • A school farm or ag teacher points to Supervised Agricultural Experience.
  • Greek letters on a shirt point to the fraternity.
  • Level 0 to 5 points to driving automation.

For other letters you may spot under the hood or on a dashboard, try HVAC for heating and cooling systems or RPM for engine speed.

Questions people ask

What does SAE stand for in oil, in plain words?

It means the oil's thickness was rated under the Society of Automotive Engineers grading system. A label like 5W-30 gives a cold rating and a hot rating. Match the grade listed in your owner's manual.

Is SAE the same as standard or imperial tools?

In everyday use, yes. An SAE tool set uses inch sizes, while a metric set uses millimeters. The two are not interchangeable, even when sizes look close.

Is SAE a government agency?

No. It is a professional society that writes technical standards. Government agencies sometimes refer to those standards, but the society itself does not make laws.

What does SAE stand for in FFA or agriculture class?

In agricultural education it stands for Supervised Agricultural Experience. It is a hands on project outside class time, such as raising animals, working on a farm or running a small plant business.

How do you pronounce SAE?

Say each letter: S A E. Nobody pronounces it as a single syllable.
