What does RPE stand for? In the gym and in exercise science, RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion. It is a number you give to how hard an effort feels to you, from very easy to as hard as you can go. A coach might write "run 20 minutes at RPE 6" instead of a pace or a heart rate.
The idea is simple. Your breathing, your muscles and your sense of strain all add up to one score. That score changes with sleep, heat, stress and fitness, which is exactly why many trainers like it: it adjusts to the day you are having.

What does RPE stand for in fitness?
Each letter of the short form has a job:
- Rating: you put a number on it.
- Perceived: the number comes from how it feels to you, not from a machine.
- Exertion: the thing being rated is effort.
So when a workout plan lists an RPE, it is asking you to judge your own effort and match it to a target. A rating near the bottom means you could chat easily. A rating near the top means you could not keep going much longer.
The two RPE scales you will see
There are two main versions. The older one was created by a Swedish researcher named Gunnar Borg and runs from 6 to 20. The odd range was chosen so that the number, times ten, lands near a healthy young adult's heart rate during the effort. A rating of 13, "somewhat hard," lines up roughly with 130 beats per minute.
Most gyms, apps and coaches now use a simpler 1 to 10 scale.
| RPE | How it feels | Talk test |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Very light, like a slow walk | Easy full conversation |
| 3 to 4 | Light, a warm up pace | Talk in full sentences |
| 5 to 6 | Moderate, steady work | Short sentences |
| 7 to 8 | Hard, breathing heavily | A few words at a time |
| 9 | Very hard | Barely a word |
| 10 | Maximum effort | No talking |
What does RPE stand for in exercise with weights?
In strength training, the 1 to 10 scale is tied to how many more reps you could have done. Lifters call that idea reps in reserve, or RIR.
- RPE 10: no more reps were possible.
- RPE 9: one more rep was left.
- RPE 8: about two reps left.
- RPE 7: about three reps left.
In a training log: "Squat 3 sets of 5 at RPE 8." This means pick a weight where, after the fifth rep, you feel you could have done about two more with good form. If the bar moves fast and easy, add weight. If the fifth rep is a grind, take some off.
Why coaches use a feeling instead of a number on a machine
A fixed weight or pace can be too hard on a bad day and too easy on a good one. An effort rating moves with you. It also works without any gear: no watch, no heart strap, no treadmill screen.
Physical therapists and cardiac rehab teams often use it for the same reason. Some medicines change heart rate, so a target pulse can mislead, while a felt rating still works. Beginners may rate poorly at first, but most people get more accurate after a few weeks of practice.
Sample sentences with RPE
- "Keep today's bike ride at RPE 4 so your legs recover."
- "My last set felt like a 9, so I stopped there."
- "Intervals: 1 minute at RPE 8, 2 minutes easy, repeat six times."
- "Log your RPE after each set so we can adjust next week."
- "The class stays around RPE 6 for the main block."
Other meanings of RPE
Away from workouts, eye doctors and safety officers use the letters too, and the setting tells you which is meant.
| Field | Stands for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Eye health | Retinal pigment epithelium | "The scan showed changes in the RPE." |
| Safety and work | Respiratory protective equipment | Masks and respirators, mostly in UK writing |
On a workout plan, though, RPE almost always means the effort scale. Our famous acronyms page has many more everyday letters, and the FITT and BPM pages cover nearby workout terms.
Questions people ask
What does RPE stand for in exercise?
In exercise, RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion. It is a score for how hard an effort feels to you, usually on a 1 to 10 scale or the 6 to 20 Borg scale.
What is RPE 7 in lifting?
RPE 7 means the set felt hard but you could have done about three more reps with good form. It is a common target for building strength without going to failure.
Is RPE the same as heart rate?
No. Heart rate is measured by a device, while RPE is your own judgment of effort. On the 6 to 20 scale the two line up roughly, but RPE also reflects breathing, muscle fatigue and how you feel that day.
How do you pronounce RPE?
Spell it out as "R P E." Trainers read it as three separate letters.
Is RPE accurate for beginners?
It can be a little off at first, since new exercisers have less experience with hard efforts. Most people rate more accurately after a few weeks of logging their sessions.
