RADAR Acronym: Radio Detection and Ranging

TechScienceWeatherUpdated Oct 30

The radar acronym stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. A radar set sends out radio waves, listens for the echoes that bounce back, and uses them to tell whether something is there and how far away it is.

Few people today think of radar as short for anything. It is spelled in lowercase as a normal noun, and it shows up in weather reports, air travel, police speed checks and the everyday phrase "on my radar."

Quick facts

  • How to say it

    RAY dar
  • Usual spelling

What radar stands for, piece by piece

How the letters of RADAR were chosen
LettersWordWhat it means here
RARadioThe kind of wave the system sends
DDetectionNoticing that an object is out there
AAndThe joining word, kept to make the name sayable
RRangingMeasuring the distance, or range, to it

Unlike most acronyms, this one takes two letters from the first word and even keeps the A from "and." The goal was a short, easy word, and the result happens to be a palindrome. You can read more about how such words form in what is an acronym.

How radar works, in plain terms

Radio waves travel at the speed of light. A radar antenna sends a quick pulse, then switches to listening. When the pulse hits a plane, a storm cloud or a car, part of it reflects back. The set measures the time between sending and hearing the echo. Half of that time, multiplied by the speed of light, gives the distance.

The direction the antenna is pointing shows where the object is. Many systems also use the Doppler effect: an echo from something moving toward the antenna comes back at a slightly higher frequency, and from something moving away at a lower one. That shift reveals speed.

Where the radar acronym came from

Several countries built radio detection systems in the years before and during World War II. The word radar was coined in the US Navy around 1940 as a short, practical name for the technology, and it spread to the other Allied forces during the war.

After the war the word moved into daily speech. Like scuba and laser, it is now written in lowercase in most writing, and dictionaries treat it as a regular noun. Only articles about the word itself, like this page, usually show it in capitals.

Radar in everyday life

  • Weather: Doppler radar shows rain, snow and the rotation inside severe storms on the local forecast map.
  • Air travel: air traffic controllers use radar to track planes, and aircraft carry weather radar in the nose.
  • Roads: police radar guns measure vehicle speed, and many new cars use small radar sensors for automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
  • Ships: marine radar shows other vessels and the coastline in fog or at night.
  • Science: radar maps the ground from satellites and measures the surface of other planets.

Forecast on the evening news: "Radar shows a line of heavy storms moving east at 30 miles per hour." The colored map is built from echoes off raindrops, and the speed comes from tracking the echoes over time.

Radar vs sonar vs lidar

Three detection words follow the same pattern but use different waves.

Three ranging systems compared
WordStands forUses
RadarRadio detection and rangingRadio waves; works through clouds and darkness
SonarSound navigation and rangingSound waves, mostly underwater
LidarLight detection and rangingLaser light; very fine detail over shorter distances

Each one sends a signal out and times the echo. The kind of wave decides what it is good at. More science and gadget terms are in the tech acronyms section.

Radar stands for more than a machine: the idiom

The word has a life outside engineering. "On my radar" means something has your attention or is in your plans. "Under the radar" means quietly or without being noticed, the way a low flying plane might avoid detection.

  • "That job opening wasn't on my radar until you mentioned it."
  • "The band stayed under the radar for years before its big break."
  • "Put the budget meeting on your radar for next week."

Questions people ask

What does radar stand for?

Radar stands for radio detection and ranging. It finds objects with radio waves and measures how far away they are.

Is radar an acronym?

Yes. It began as an acronym and is now used as an ordinary lowercase word. Most people never think of the full form.

Who came up with the word radar?

The term was coined in the US Navy around 1940. The technology itself was developed by researchers in several countries at about the same time.

Is radar a palindrome?

Yes. Radar is spelled the same forward and backward, which makes it one of the best known palindromes in English.

What is the difference between radar and lidar?

Radar uses radio waves, and lidar uses laser light. Lidar gives finer detail, while radar works better in rain, fog and over long distances.
