What does RACI stand for? It stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed, four roles that a team assigns to people for each task in a project. Laid out as a grid, it is called a RACI chart or RACI matrix, and its job is to answer a simple question: who does what?
Teams reach for a RACI chart when work keeps falling through the cracks or when too many people think they get the final say. By naming one owner and spelling out who gives input and who just needs updates, the chart cuts down on confusion, repeat meetings and email threads that copy everyone.

RACI full form: the four roles
| Letter | Role | Plain meaning |
|---|---|---|
| R | Responsible | Does the work |
| A | Accountable | Owns the result and signs off |
| C | Consulted | Gives input before or during the work |
| I | Informed | Gets updates, does not weigh in |
The difference between R and A trips people up. The responsible person, or people, carry out the task. The accountable person answers for it and approves it. On a small task those can be the same person. On a large one, a manager might be accountable while two analysts are responsible.
Consulted means two way talk: these people are asked for their view. Informed means one way: they are told what happened, usually after a decision.
How a RACI matrix looks
Tasks run down the left side and people or roles run across the top. Each cell holds one or more letters.
| Task | Marketing lead | Designer | Developer | Legal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Write new copy | A | C | I | C |
| Create page layouts | A | R | C | I |
| Build the pages | I | C | R | I |
| Approve launch | A | I | I | C |
In this sample, the marketing lead owns every outcome, but the hands on work spreads out. Legal only gets a vote on copy and launch, and simply stays informed about design and building.
What does RACI stand for on a real team?
In practice the chart is a conversation tool. Teams build it at a kickoff meeting, argue a bit over the A column and then share it. A few habits help:
- One A per row. Two owners usually means no owner.
- At least one R per row. Someone has to do the work.
- Keep C short. Every consulted person adds time.
- Use roles, not names, when people change often. "Shift supervisor" lasts longer than a name.
- Revisit it. A chart from the first week can go stale by the third month.
Kickoff email: "Attached is the RACI for the office move. Jordan is A on the vendor contract, so send quotes to Jordan. Facilities is C, and the whole staff is I."
RACI acronym variants
Some teams add or swap letters to fit how they work:
- RASCI or RACIS: adds S for Support, people who help the responsible person.
- DACI: Driver, Approver, Contributors, Informed, often used for decisions rather than tasks.
- RACI with V or Q: some groups add a letter for a verifier or quality check.
The core idea stays the same. Each version tries to make roles clear before work starts.
RACI stands for clarity, not hierarchy
A RACI chart is not an org chart. A junior employee can be accountable for a task while a senior one is only informed. It also does not set deadlines or budgets; it sits beside a project plan that does. Questions people ask
What is the difference between responsible and accountable?
The responsible person does the work. The accountable person owns the outcome and approves it. One person can hold both roles, but each task should have only one accountable person.
How do you pronounce RACI?
Most people say RAY-see, as one word. A few spell the letters out, and both are understood in meetings.
Can more than one person be accountable in a RACI chart?
Standard practice says no. One accountable person per task keeps decisions from stalling, while several people can be responsible, consulted or informed.
When should a team use a RACI chart?
It helps on projects that cross departments, when roles are unclear or when work keeps getting dropped. Small two person tasks rarely need one.
Is RACI the same as a responsibility assignment matrix?
Yes. RACI is the most common form of a responsibility assignment matrix, a grid that maps tasks to the people involved.
