RACE Acronym: What It Stands For

Memory aidsFire safetyWritingUpdated Oct 30

The RACE acronym has two well known meanings. In fire safety it stands for Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish (some trainers use Evacuate for the last letter), the order of actions staff learn for a fire at work. In school it stands for Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain, a pattern for writing short answers to reading questions.

Which one you need depends on where you saw it. A poster by a hospital fire alarm points to the safety steps. A worksheet stapled to a reading passage points to the writing plan. Both are memory aids, and both are said as the ordinary word "race."

What does RACE stand for in fire safety?

Fire trainers teach the letters as a sequence, because in a real fire people forget what to do first.

RACE for a fire at work
LetterStepWhat you do
RRescueMove anyone in immediate danger away from the fire, if you can do it safely.
AAlarmPull the nearest alarm and call 911 or your building's emergency number.
CContainClose doors and windows to slow smoke and flames. Some plans say Confine.
EExtinguish or EvacuateFight a small fire only if trained and safe, or leave by the planned route.
This is general safety information. Follow your own workplace fire plan and the directions of fire officials, and never put yourself at risk to fight a fire.

What does RACE stand for in healthcare?

Hospitals and nursing homes lean on this race fire acronym more than most places, because many patients cannot walk out alone. Staff learn that rescue may mean moving a patient from one room to the next smoke compartment rather than outside. Containing the fire by closing every door on the hallway is a big part of protecting people who stay in bed.

A nurse's orientation card: "Fire in a patient room: RACE, then PASS if trained." The card tells new staff to rescue, sound the alarm, close doors, and only then think about an extinguisher.

The PASS steps (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) cover the extinguisher itself, and the two acronyms are often printed side by side.

What does RACE stand for in English class?

Reading and writing teachers use the same four letters for a short constructed response, the kind of answer that asks you to use evidence from a text.

  1. Restate the question in your own words as the start of your answer.
  2. Answer every part of the question clearly.
  3. Cite evidence from the text, such as a quote or a detail with the page number.
  4. Explain how that evidence supports your answer.

Many classrooms use RACES, adding Summarize to wrap up with a closing sentence. Some teachers swap Cite for Cite evidence, or Explain for Expand, but the plan is the same.

The RACE acronym in a sample answer

Question: "Why does the main character return to the farm?"

Answer: "The main character returns to the farm because she misses her grandfather. The text says she 'read his old letters every night.' This shows that she feels lonely without him and wants to be near the place he loved."

The first sentence restates and answers. The quote is the citation. The last sentence explains. Students can check each letter off before turning the work in, which is why the race acronym in writing is popular from elementary grades through high school.

How to say and write RACE

Because people say it as the single word "race," it is a true acronym. Capital letters signal that it is a memory aid, not the ordinary word for a contest or a group of people. You may also see the r.a.c.e. acronym with periods on older posters. Both forms mean the same thing. For more on what makes a set of letters an acronym, read what is an acronym.

Other memory aids that sit beside RACE

  • PASS: the four motions for using a fire extinguisher.
  • ALICE: a response plan for an intruder in a school or office.
  • BE FAST: warning signs of a stroke.
  • STAR: a structure for answering interview questions.

You can browse more of these on the memory acronyms page.

Questions people ask

At most workplaces it means Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish, the order of steps for a fire. Some plans replace the last word with Evacuate.

What does R.A.C.E. stand for in healthcare?

It is the same fire response used in hospitals: staff move patients away from danger, pull the alarm, shut doors to hold back smoke, and then extinguish or evacuate. Staff usually practice it in fire drills.
