What Does OBO Stand For?

EverydayBuying and sellingClassified adsUpdated Oct 30

What does OBO stand for? On a for sale listing, it stands for or best offer. The seller names an asking price and then adds OBO to say, in effect, "this is what I hope to get, but I will listen to lower offers." It is the opposite of a price marked firm.

You will see the letters on online marketplace posts, used car windows, yard sale tags, bulletin board flyers and the classified section of a local paper. The seller still decides which offer to accept, and best does not always mean highest. A quick pickup or cash in hand can win over a slightly bigger number.

What does OBO stand for in a listing?

Each letter maps to one short word:

  • O: or
  • B: best
  • O: offer

The phrase always follows a price. "Asking price, or best offer" means the seller would like the listed amount but invites buyers to make a counteroffer. Each letter is read separately, so OBO is an initialism, the same kind of short form as many on the famous acronyms list.

Marketplace post: "Oak dining table, seats six, minor scratches. Asking price in photo, OBO. Pickup only." The seller expects offers and will compare them before picking one.

What best offer really means

Many buyers assume best means the most money. Often it does, but sellers weigh other things too:

  • Speed: someone who can pick up today may beat a higher offer next week.
  • Certainty: cash or an instant payment feels safer than a promise.
  • Ease: a buyer who will carry a heavy couch down the stairs adds real value.

So the seller keeps the right to say no to every offer, including one that is close to the asking price.

How to make an offer on an OBO item

  1. Check similar listings so your number is fair and grounded.
  2. Be polite and specific. "Would you take a little less if I pick up tonight?" works better than a bare number.
  3. Explain any reason for a lower offer, such as a worn part you saw in the photos.
  4. Do not be insulted by a no. The seller may wait for more offers.
  5. Keep your word. If your offer is accepted, show up and pay as agreed.

Very low offers are often called lowballs. Some sellers add "no lowballers" next to OBO to discourage them.

When to use OBO as a seller

Adding the letters makes sense when you want the item gone and can live with some give on the number. It invites more messages and can speed up a sale. If you need a specific amount, write firm instead, so buyers know not to haggle.

Used car window sign: "One owner, new tires, service records. Asking price below. OBO. Call after 5." Buyers read this as an open door to negotiate in person.

Set your asking price a bit above the lowest amount you will accept. That leaves room for offers without losing money you need.

How to write OBO

Use capital letters without periods: OBO. Put it right after the asking price, sometimes in parentheses. Lowercase obo is common in quick posts and is understood. There is no plural, and the phrase itself never has to follow.

Reading it aloud, people usually say "or best offer" rather than the letters. Some short forms get spelled out aloud while others turn into words; acronym vs abbreviation explains the split.

Questions people ask

What does OBO mean on a marketplace post?

It means or best offer. The seller is open to offers below the listed price and will choose the one that suits them best.

Does OBO mean the seller must take the highest offer?

No. The seller can accept any offer or none. Speed, payment method and pickup plans often matter as much as the amount.

What is the difference between OBO and firm?

OBO invites bargaining, while firm means the price will not change. Sellers pick one to set expectations.

Is it rude to offer much less on an OBO item?

Not rude, but a very low offer may be ignored. A reasonable offer with a clear reason gets a better response.

What does ONO mean?

ONO means or nearest offer. It is the British and Australian version of OBO and works the same way.
