What Does NFC Stand For?

TechPaymentsUpdated Oct 30

What does NFC stand for? On a phone, a payment terminal or a transit gate, NFC means Near Field Communication, a wireless technology that lets two devices swap small amounts of data when they are held a few centimeters apart. It is what makes tap to pay cards and phone wallets work.

Sports fans know a second meaning. In American pro football, NFC stands for the National Football Conference, one of the two halves of the NFL. Which one someone means is almost always clear from the setting: a settings menu points to the tech, while a standings table points to football.

How Near Field Communication works

NFC uses radio waves at 13.56 MHz, the same frequency used by many contactless ID badges. One device makes a small field, and the other picks up the signal when it comes very close. That short range is a feature: you have to bring the devices nearly together on purpose, which makes accidental taps unlikely.

NFC grew out of RFID, radio frequency identification. The main difference is that NFC works in both directions, so a phone can read a tag and also act like a card. A small sticker called an NFC tag needs no battery at all; it draws power from the reader's field when you tap it.

At a checkout: the card reader shows a symbol of curved lines and the words "tap to pay." You hold your card or phone near it for a second, the reader beeps, and the sale goes through. That tap is NFC passing the payment data.

Everyday uses of NFC

  • Contactless payments with cards, phones and watches.
  • Transit fares at subway and bus gates.
  • Door access with badges and hotel key cards.
  • Pairing headphones or speakers by tapping them to a phone.
  • Smart tags on posters, menus or products that open a web page.

A QR code does a similar job for links, but you scan it with the camera from a distance. NFC needs a tap, and it works even in low light.

What does NFC stand for in football?

In the NFL, the National Football Conference is one of two conferences, paired with the American Football Conference, or AFC. The two were set up in 1970, when the NFL merged with a rival league. The NFC has 16 teams split into four divisions: East, North, South and West.

Teams play mostly within their conference during the regular season. In the playoffs, NFC teams compete for the conference title, and the NFC champion meets the AFC champion in the league's championship game.

How to say and write NFC

Say the letters one by one. Capital letters, no periods. Since N is said "en," the article is an: "an NFC tag," "an NFC title game." In phone menus you may see it as a simple on and off switch labeled NFC. Device and network shorthand of every kind is listed in the tech acronyms section.

NFC stands for convenience, but keep it safe

Because the range is so short, it is hard for someone to read your card from across a room. Payment systems also add a one time code to each tap, so the data cannot simply be copied and reused. Still, it makes sense to lock your phone, keep cards in a wallet and turn off NFC if you never use it. Look-alike letters cause mix ups too: NFT means non fungible token, which has nothing to do with tapping devices.

Questions people ask

Should I turn NFC on or off?

Leave it on if you use tap to pay or tap to pair. If you never use those features, turning it off does no harm and may save a little battery.

Is NFC the same as Bluetooth?

No. Both are wireless, but Bluetooth works across a room and streams data, while NFC works only at a few centimeters and sends short bursts. Sometimes an NFC tap is used to start a Bluetooth pairing.

What does NFC stand for in football?

It stands for National Football Conference, one of the NFL's two conferences. Its champion plays the AFC champion in the league's title game.

How many teams are in the NFC?

There are 16 teams, arranged in four divisions of four teams each.

Can NFC work without internet?

Yes. The tap itself is a direct link between two nearby devices. Some apps then use the internet to finish a task, such as approving a payment.
