What Does DEFCON Stand For?

GovernmentMilitaryCold WarUpdated Oct 30

What does DEFCON stand for? It is short for Defense Readiness Condition, the alert scale the United States military uses to set how prepared its forces must be for possible conflict. The scale has five steps, and the numbers run backward from what many people expect: DEFCON 5 is the calmest, and DEFCON 1 is the most serious.

The term comes from the Cold War, and it slipped into everyday speech through films, news stories and jokes. Someone who says "my boss is at DEFCON 1" means things are about as tense as they can get.

What does DEFCON stand for, and how is it built?

Most military short forms are built from initial letters, but DEFCON is a blend of syllables. It joins the first syllable of Defense with the first syllable of Condition. The word Readiness sits in the full name but leaves no letters behind. Because people pronounce the result as a single word, DEF-con, it behaves like an acronym in speech.

Writers usually put it in capitals with a number after it: DEFCON 3, DEFCON 2. No hyphen goes between the word and the number.

The five DEFCON levels

DEFCON from calm to critical
LevelGeneral meaning
DEFCON 5Normal peacetime readiness
DEFCON 4Raised watchfulness and stronger security
DEFCON 3Forces made ready above normal; some units prepared to move quickly
DEFCON 2Further increase in readiness, just short of maximum
DEFCON 1Maximum readiness, used when war is expected or under way

The level does not have to be the same everywhere. Different commands or regions can sit at different levels at the same moment, and the current setting is normally not announced to the public.

Times the level was raised

Public records point to a few well known moments:

  • Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962: the bomber and missile forces of the time were moved to DEFCON 2, the highest level known to have been ordered.
  • Arab and Israeli war, 1973: US forces went to DEFCON 3 during tension with the Soviet Union.
  • The September 11 attacks: forces were raised to DEFCON 3 on the day of the attacks.

DEFCON 1 has never been publicly confirmed as ordered for the whole military.

DEFCON in everyday speech

Outside the military, people borrow the scale as a playful way to rate stress or urgency.

  • "The kitchen is at DEFCON 1. Guests arrive in ten minutes and the oven just died."
  • "Relax, this is DEFCON 5. It is only a typo."
  • "When the server went down, the whole office hit DEFCON 2."
  • "Mom went full DEFCON when she found the broken vase."

Group text: "Storm warning upgraded. We are at DEFCON 3 for the camping trip." The writer means plans may change and everyone should be ready, not that anything military is happening.

A common slip is to treat DEFCON 5 as the worst. Remember that the scale counts down toward danger, like a countdown to launch.

DEFCON is not the terror alert scale

DEFCON measures how ready the armed forces are. It is not a public warning system for civilians. Separate civilian alert systems, run by agencies such as the DHS, tell the public about threats. Emergency alerts on phones and TV come from civil authorities such as FEMA and the weather service. If you hear DEFCON in a news story, it refers to military posture, and you will not get a phone alert when it changes.

Spelled with a space, DEF CON is also the name of a long running gathering of computer security researchers. The name nods to the military term, but the event has no link to the alert scale.

Questions people ask

Is DEFCON 1 or DEFCON 5 the worst?

DEFCON 1 is the most serious level, meaning maximum readiness for war. DEFCON 5 is normal peacetime.

What DEFCON level are we at right now?

The military does not usually make the current level public. Any website that claims to show the live official level is guessing.

Has the US ever been at DEFCON 1?

There is no public record of DEFCON 1 being ordered for all US forces. The highest widely known level is DEFCON 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

How do you pronounce DEFCON?

Say it as one word, DEF-con, leaning on the DEF. Reading it as six separate letters would sound odd to any listener.

What does going to DEFCON 1 mean in slang?

It means reacting with maximum alarm. People use it jokingly for a crisis at home, at work or in a game.
