What Does COO Stand For?

BusinessLeadershipUpdated Oct 30

What does COO stand for? In a company, the COO is the Chief Operating Officer, the senior executive in charge of daily operations. If the chief executive decides where the business is headed, the COO usually makes sure the work actually gets done: products shipped, services delivered, teams staffed and processes running on time.

The title is common in mid-sized and large companies, hospitals, nonprofits and universities. Not every organization has one. Some split the job among several vice presidents, and in a small startup the founder may cover it alone.

The COO full form tells you the scope: operations. That word covers making, delivering and supporting whatever the company sells. In a factory business it means plants and supply chains. In a software company it may mean customer support, hiring and internal systems. In a hospital it can mean staffing, facilities and patient flow.

What a chief operating officer actually does

  • Turns the company's long range plan into budgets, schedules and targets
  • Oversees departments such as manufacturing, logistics, customer service or human resources
  • Tracks performance with measures like KPIs
  • Fixes bottlenecks, cuts waste and improves processes
  • Steps in for the chief executive when needed

The exact duties change a lot from one company to the next. Some COOs focus on scaling a fast growing business. Others are brought in to steady a company in trouble. In some firms the COO is seen as the next in line for the top job.

COO, CEO and CFO side by side

These three titles appear together so often that people mix them up. Each one owns a different part of leadership.

COOChief Operating OfficerRunning daily operations
CFOChief Financial OfficerMoney, reporting and financial planning

In most companies both the COO and the CFO report to the CEO, while the chief executive answers to the board. A useful shorthand: the CEO sets the goal, the CFO funds it, and the COO delivers it. For more company titles and terms, see the business acronyms hub.

Where you will see the letters

Company announcement: "Please welcome Jordan Ellis, our new COO, who will lead our operations, supply chain and customer support teams." The letters tell staff that Jordan now runs the day to day side of the business.

You will also see COO on business cards, in email signatures, on org charts and in news stories about leadership changes. On a résumé, a person might list "COO, regional health network" to show a top operations role.

Other meanings of COO

  • Certificate of origin: in shipping and trade, a document stating where goods were made. Customs forms often ask for one.
  • Country of origin: the country where a product was made, also used on import paperwork.
  • Coo: written in lowercase, it is just a word for the soft sound a dove or a baby makes. It is not an abbreviation.

If the text is about trade or customs, COO likely means certificate or country of origin. In a company setting, it is the executive.

Saying and writing COO

Say it as three letters: "C O O." Do not say it like the bird sound. Use three uppercase letters, no dots. The opening sound "see" calls for "a": "a COO with retail experience." The plural is COOs, with no apostrophe. The split between letter-by-letter names and ones said as words is explained in acronym vs abbreviation, our basics guide.

Questions people ask

Is a COO higher than a CEO?

No. In most companies the COO reports to the CEO. The CEO is the top executive and answers to the board of directors.

What is the COO full form?

The COO full form is Chief Operating Officer. In trade paperwork, it can also mean certificate of origin.

Does every company have a COO?

No. Many smaller companies do without one, and some large companies spread the work among other executives instead.

How do you pronounce COO?

Say each letter, "C O O." Saying it as one word sounds like the noise a dove makes and can confuse listeners.

What is the difference between a COO and a president?

In some companies they are the same person, and the title may read "president and COO." In others, president is a separate role, so check the company's own org chart.
