What Does CMA Stand For?

BusinessReal estateCareersUpdated Oct 30

What does CMA stand for? Home sellers, clinic staff and accountants each mean something different. In real estate, the most common search, CMA stands for Comparative Market Analysis, a report an agent prepares to estimate what a home could sell for. In a doctor's office it usually means Certified Medical Assistant, and in finance and accounting it means Certified Management Accountant.

The letters also name a country music organization and its awards show, a British competition regulator and a kind of investment account. The sections below sort these out by field, starting with the real estate meaning.

What does CMA stand for in real estate?

A Comparative Market Analysis compares one home with similar homes nearby that recently sold, are for sale now, or failed to sell. Agents call those homes "comps," short for comparables. By adjusting for size, age, condition and features, the agent arrives at a likely price range.

  • Sellers use a CMA to choose a listing price.
  • Buyers use one to decide how much to offer.
  • Owners sometimes ask for one just to learn what their home might be worth.

Agent's email: "I ran a CMA on your house. Three similar homes on your street sold in the last few months for close to the same price, so I suggest listing in that range." The report usually comes as a short packet with photos, square footage and sale prices of each comp.

Agents often prepare a CMA free, as part of winning a listing. It is an opinion, not an official value.

CMA vs appraisal

How a CMA differs from a home appraisal
PointCMAAppraisal
Prepared byA real estate agentA licensed or certified appraiser
PurposeSet a list price or plan an offerSupport a mortgage loan decision
Who orders itSeller, buyer or agentUsually the lender
Official standingInformal estimateFormal valuation report

Both look at comparable sales, but lenders rely on the appraisal. A CMA can be higher or lower than what an appraiser later finds. Homes in a planned community may also list HOA fees in the report, since those affect what buyers will pay.

This is general information. For decisions about pricing, buying or a loan, talk with a licensed agent, an appraiser or a lender about your own property.

The CMA credential in medicine and accounting

A Certified Medical Assistant works in clinics and doctor's offices, taking vital signs, preparing patients, giving some injections and handling records. The title shows the person passed a national certification exam. Some job ads ask for a CMA or another medical assistant credential, so read the posting closely.

A Certified Management Accountant focuses on inside the company work: budgets, cost analysis, forecasting and planning. It is different from a CPA, the license for public accounting, auditing and tax work. Some finance professionals hold both, along with titles like CFA for investment analysis.

Writing CMA correctly

CMA is said letter by letter and written in capitals without periods. Since C is pronounced "see," it takes a: "a CMA report," "a CMA in our office." After a person's name, credentials go after a comma: "Ana Ruiz, CMA." The plural is CMAs: "Our agent pulled two CMAs."

Spell the full form out the first time if readers might not know which meaning you intend. For more letters from offices and banks, see our business acronyms section, and for medical office letters, try HMO or PPO.

Questions people ask

What does CMA stand for in real estate?

It stands for Comparative Market Analysis. An agent compares your home with similar nearby homes to estimate a reasonable price range for selling or buying.

Is a CMA the same as an appraisal?

No. A CMA is an agent's informal estimate, while an appraisal is a formal valuation by a licensed appraiser, usually ordered by a lender. Their numbers can differ.

What does CMA mean after a name?

Most often it is a credential: Certified Medical Assistant in a clinic or Certified Management Accountant in a finance setting. The workplace tells you which one.

Is CMA or CPA better for accounting?

They serve different paths. The CPA is a state license for public accounting, auditing and tax, while the CMA is a certification focused on management accounting inside companies.

How much does a CMA cost?

A real estate CMA is often provided at no charge by an agent who hopes to win your business. Certification exams for the medical and accounting CMA have their own fees, set by the groups that run them.
