What does ASPCA stand for? Those five letters are short for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a nonprofit animal welfare group founded in New York City in 1866. It was the first humane society of its kind in North America.
The ASPCA is a private charity, not a government agency. It runs programs such as an animal poison control hotline, adoption and shelter work, and help for animals in disasters and cruelty cases. Many local groups have similar names, but most of them are separate organizations.

The five letters of ASPCA
The name is long, so the short form drops the small words "for," "the," "of" and "to" and keeps the main ones.
| Letter | Word |
|---|---|
| A | American |
| S | Society |
| P | Prevention |
| C | Cruelty |
| A | Animals |
Notice that the letters follow the words in order, but "to" is skipped between cruelty and animals. That is normal for long organization names.
How the group started
The ASPCA was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh, a New Yorker who had seen animals mistreated in the streets and wanted the law to protect them. The model came from a British society with a similar name, and the word "American" was added to set the new group apart. Early work focused on working horses, which pulled carts and streetcars in the city.
Soon after the society formed, New York passed an anti-cruelty law, and the society was given a role in enforcing it. Other cities started their own societies in the years that followed.
What does ASPCA stand for in practice today?
The name describes the mission: preventing cruelty. In daily work, that covers several kinds of programs.
- Animal poison control: a hotline that pet owners and vets can call when an animal eats something harmful. A consultation fee may apply.
- Adoption and shelter work: placing animals in homes, and supporting shelters with training and grants.
- Disaster and cruelty response: helping rescue animals after storms and floods and in large cruelty cases.
- Public education and policy: teaching pet care and working on animal protection laws.
A worried owner: "My dog just chewed a pack of sugar free gum." A vet clinic might say, "Call your vet or the ASPCA poison control line right now." Here the letters point to a real service, not just a name.
ASPCA vs your local SPCA or humane society
Here is where people get confused most often. Many towns have an SPCA or a humane society, and people assume these are branches of the ASPCA. Most of them are not. They are independent groups with their own boards and budgets that share the general idea and similar wording.
| Name | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| ASPCA | One national nonprofit based in New York City |
| SPCA (with a town or county name) | A local, independent society |
| Humane society | A local group or a separate national group |
| Animal control | A city or county government office |

How to say and write ASPCA
People do not try to pronounce it as one word; they read out all five letters, "A S P C A," which makes it an initialism. Keep the letters uppercase and leave out dots. The first letter is spoken "ay," so writers put "an" before it: "an ASPCA program." The full name uses capital letters on the main words and lowercase on "for," "the," "of" and "to."
The ASPCA is one example of what is often called an NGO, a group that works outside government. PETA is a different animal rights group with its own page here. Other well known groups and terms are collected on our famous acronyms list.
