What Does ABS Stand For?

EverydayCarsSafetyUpdated Oct 30

What does ABS stand for? On a car, it stands for anti-lock braking system, a safety feature that stops the wheels from locking up when you brake hard. You see the letters on the dashboard warning light, in a car's feature list and on repair estimates.

Outside the garage, the same letters have other jobs. At the gym, abs is short for abdominal muscles. In manufacturing, ABS is a tough plastic. The setting almost always makes the meaning clear.

Quick facts

  • In a car

What does ABS stand for in a car?

In a car, truck or motorcycle, ABS means anti-lock braking system. Some manuals say anti-lock brake system. Both mean the same thing.

Anti-lock braking system, split into its letters
LetterWordRole
AAnti-lockPrevents the wheels from locking
BBrakingWorks through the normal brake pedal
SSystemSensors, a control unit and valves working together

When a wheel locks, the tire skids instead of rolling, and a skidding tire cannot steer the car. ABS watches each wheel's speed. If one starts to stop too fast, the system eases the brake on that wheel for a split second, then applies it again, many times a second. The car keeps slowing while the driver can still turn the wheel around a hazard.

What it feels like when ABS works

The first time ABS kicks in, many drivers are surprised. The brake pedal buzzes or pulses under your foot, and you may hear a grinding or clicking sound. That is normal. It means the system is doing its job.

A wet road: a deer steps out, and you press the brake as hard as you can. The pedal shudders, but the car does not slide sideways, and you steer around the animal. Keep pressing firmly through the pulsing. Do not pump the pedal, because the system is already doing that for you.

ABS does not always shorten stopping distance. On loose gravel or deep snow, a car can sometimes stop a bit sooner without it. Its main gift is steering control during a panic stop.

The ABS warning light

Each time you start the car, the ABS light should come on for a moment and then turn off. That is a self check. If the light stays on while you drive, the anti-lock part of the system has found a fault and has likely switched itself off.

  • Your regular brakes usually still work, but without the anti-lock help in a hard stop.
  • Common causes include a dirty or damaged wheel speed sensor, a wiring problem or low brake fluid.
  • If the separate red brake warning light is also on, the problem may affect the main brakes, so stop safely and get help.
This is general information, not repair advice. Check your owner's manual and have a qualified mechanic inspect any brake warning light.

The gym meaning is a little different from the rest. Abs is a clipped form of abdominals, said as one word, "abs," usually written in lowercase. The others are initialisms said letter by letter.

How to say and write ABS

For the brakes, say "A B S" and keep it in capitals, no dots. Pick "an" as the article, since the letter A opens with a vowel sound: "an ABS fault," "an ABS sensor." For muscles, say and write abs as a plain word. You would never say "A B S" at the gym.

Writers sometimes add the word system or brakes after ABS: "ABS brakes." That technically repeats a word, but it is common and clear. Our page on acronym vs abbreviation shows why ABS the brake system and abs the muscles are different kinds of short forms.

Other dashboard and car letters

  • PRNDL marks the gear shifter: park, reverse, neutral, drive, low.
  • RPM is revolutions per minute, shown on the tachometer.
  • PSI is pounds per square inch, the unit for tire pressure.
  • TCS or traction control works alongside ABS to stop wheels from spinning when you speed up.

Questions people ask

What does ABS stand for on a car?

It stands for anti-lock braking system. It keeps the wheels from locking during hard braking so you can still steer.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

Your regular brakes usually still work, but the anti-lock feature may be off. Drive carefully and have the car checked soon, and stop if the red brake light also comes on.

Should you pump the brakes with ABS?

No. Press the pedal firmly and hold it. The system pulses the brakes for you.

What does abs mean at the gym?

It is short for abdominals, the muscles across the front of the belly. It is said as one word.

What is ABS plastic?

ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a strong, light plastic used in toys, pipes, car trim and many household items.
