Square Feet Abbreviation: sq ft, ft² and More

WordsReal estateMeasurementUpdated Oct 30

The most common square feet abbreviation is sq ft, and you will also see sq. ft. with periods and the math symbol ft². All three mean the same unit of area: the space inside a square that measures one foot on each side.

Home listings, rental ads, flooring boxes and floor plans use these short forms to describe how much floor or wall a space covers. A listing that says "1,850 sq ft" means the living area adds up to 1,850 of those one foot squares. Real estate and construction writers also use a few shorthand versions, like SF, which are covered below.

Which square feet abbreviation should you use?

Ways to abbreviate square feet
FormWhere it fits bestExample
sq ftEveryday writing, listings, ads"A 900 sq ft apartment"
sq. ft.Formal or older styles that keep periods"Office: 2,400 sq. ft."
ft²Math, science, engineering"Area = 64 ft²"
sf or SFConstruction, commercial leases, plans"Retail space, 5,000 SF"
sqftSearch boxes and tight forms"min sqft: 1200"

For most readers, sq ft is the safest choice: it is short and easy to understand. Use ft² when you are writing equations or a science report, since it shows that feet are multiplied by feet. Whatever form you settle on, keep it steady across the whole document.

Square foot abbreviation: singular and plural

The square foot abbreviation does not change for plurals. Write "1 sq ft" and "350 sq ft" with no s added. That rule matches other unit short forms, like ft for feet and lb for pounds. In full words, you switch between square foot and square feet: "one square foot," "ten square feet."

Leave a gap after the figure: "400 sq ft," not "400sq ft." When the measurement describes a noun, many writers add a hyphen in full words, but with the abbreviation the plain form reads well: "a 400 sq ft studio."

How to find square footage

For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width, both in feet.

A bedroom: 12 feet long and 11 feet wide. 12 × 11 = 132, so the room is 132 sq ft. A box of flooring that "covers 20 sq ft" would need seven boxes, plus a little extra for cuts.

For an L shaped room, split it into two rectangles, find each area and add them. If you measure in inches, multiply first and then divide by 144, since one square foot holds 144 square inches.

Square feet in listings and leases

In a home listing, you may see square footage listed next to beds and baths, such as "3 bd, 2 ba, 1,640 sq ft." The figure usually means finished living space, and how garages, basements or porches are counted can vary. A multiple listing service, or MLS, often has its own rules. Commercial leases commonly use SF or RSF (rentable square feet). If the exact number matters to you, ask how it was measured.

Planning a backyard unit or ADU? Local rules often set a maximum size in square feet, so check that limit early.

Square feet vs feet squared and other mix ups

"Ten square feet" and "ten feet square" are not the same. Ten square feet is an area of 10 sq ft. Ten feet square describes a square that is ten feet on each side, which covers 100 sq ft. Also keep linear feet separate: trim, fencing and baseboards are sold by the foot of length, not by area. And do not confuse ft² with ft³, which means cubic feet, a measure of volume used for refrigerators and storage units.

Units of length and area follow patterns you can reuse. See the guides for inches and yards, the general rules in how to abbreviate, or browse every entry in the common abbreviations hub. The same habits carry over: keep units without an s in the plural, use periods or skip them consistently, and spell the word out when a reader might not know the short form.
