WordsInventoryInvoicesUpdated Oct 30

The everyday equipment abbreviation is equip., the word cut after its fifth letter, plus a period. On technical documents, maintenance logs and military or aviation lists you will also see eqpt., a squeezed form made from the key consonants. Both are read aloud as "equipment."

Equipment shows up in short form on invoices, inventory sheets, rental agreements and budget lines, where long words crowd the columns. It also appears inside many familiar letter sets, such as PPE for personal protective equipment. Here is how to pick the right form and read the common ones.

The word equipment inside common acronyms

Many well known initialisms carry an E for equipment:

  • PPE: personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, hard hats and safety glasses.
  • OEM: original equipment manufacturer, the company that made a part in the first place.
  • FF&E: furniture, fixtures and equipment, a budget category in hotels, offices and construction.
  • DME: durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers and home oxygen gear.
  • CPE: customer premises equipment, the modem or router a service provider places in your home.

On a renovation budget: "FF&E allowance, lobby: see attached list." This line covers the movable furniture and gear, separate from walls, floors and wiring.

Writing equip. correctly

  • Period: keep it in regular text, since the ending is cut off. Drop it only in all caps codes.
  • Capitals: lowercase in the middle of a phrase, capital at the start of a line item or heading.
  • No plural: equipment is a mass noun in English, like furniture. Write "three pieces of equip." or "three units," not "equips."
  • Spell it out in sentences: "The equipment arrives Monday" reads better than "The equip. arrives Monday."

General rules for clipping words live in how to abbreviate.

Equipment abbreviation in real paperwork

  • Gym sign: "Please wipe down equip. after use."
  • Rental receipt: "Equip. deposit refunded on return."
  • Shipping label: "Fragile: lab eqpt."
  • Work order: "EQPT ID 4471, replace filter, see maint. log."
  • School supply list: "Sports equip. must be labeled with the student's name."

On an invoice: "Equip. rental: 1 scissor lift, 2 days. Delivery and pickup incl." The charge is for borrowing a machine, not buying it, and the transport is part of the fee.

EQ, EQPT and other look-alikes

EQ is not a standard short form for equipment. In audio, EQ means equalizer or equalization, the controls that adjust bass and treble. In psychology and hiring, EQ is emotional quotient; see EQ. Using EQ for gear will confuse readers outside a few niche settings.

Also be careful with equiv., which means equivalent, and eq., which often means equation in math and science writing. Find more workplace short forms in the common abbreviations section, such as the short form of manufacturer.
