What Does Texas A&M Stand For?

BrandsCollegesTexasUpdated Oct 30

What does Texas A&M stand for? The A and M in the name come from Agricultural and Mechanical. When the school opened in 1876, it was called the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, a public college built to teach farming and engineering.

That is the history, not the current meaning. When the college became Texas A&M University, the letters were kept as part of the name, and officially they no longer stand for anything. The university teaches far more than farming and machines today.

The college was a land-grant school. Under a federal law passed during the Civil War era, states received public land to fund colleges that taught agriculture and the mechanical arts, along with military training. Many of these schools put "A&M" or "Agricultural and Mechanical" in their names, and Texas did the same.

Why the A and M no longer stand for anything

By the middle of the 1900s the college offered degrees in business, science, liberal arts and more. In 1963 the state renamed it Texas A&M University. The school chose to keep the familiar letters, but said they were symbolic, honoring its roots rather than describing its programs.

So the correct answer has two parts. Historically, A&M meant agricultural and mechanical. Officially, the letters now carry no expanded meaning. Plenty of organizations have done the same, keeping initials people know after the long form stopped fitting.

How to write and say A&M

Say it as "A and M." The ampersand is read as "and." In writing, the school uses the ampersand with no spaces: A&M. Typing "A and M" or "A & M" is common in searches and texts, and readers understand it, but the formal spelling is A&M.

  • Full name: Texas A&M University
  • Short name: Texas A&M, or A&M in Texas context
  • People: Aggies, for students and graduates
  • Main campus: College Station, Texas

Traditions tied to the name

The school's military history is still visible. Texas A&M has a large Corps of Cadets, and for many years membership was required of all male students. The word Aggie, an old nickname for students at agricultural colleges, stuck as the name for everyone on campus.

On a sweatshirt: "Aggie Class of '28." It names a Texas A&M graduating class. Rings and class years are a big part of school pride there.

Other places you see A&M

Several other public universities in the South and Midwest also carry A&M in their names, for the same land-grant reason. In most of them the letters still point back to agricultural and mechanical training. A few schools chose different words, such as A&T for agricultural and technical.

Outside colleges, A&M can be part of a business name, but on a game day sign in Texas it almost always means Texas A&M. Browse similar names in brand name acronyms and on the school acronyms hub.
